What to Do When Your Car Overheats

An overheating warning requires attention right away. A rising temperature gauge, red temperature light, warning message, steam, or a sudden sweet smell can indicate that the engine is no longer controlling heat normally. Your first priority is personal safety, not roadside diagnosis. Reduce the load on the engine, move out of traffic, shut the vehicle off when it is safe, and keep away from hot coolant and steam. The steps below explain how to respond without guessing at the cause.
Recognize the signs of an overheating engine
Vehicles communicate temperature problems in different ways. Some have a gauge that moves toward a red zone; others use a warning light or a message such as “engine hot.” Consult the owner’s manual so you know what the display in your vehicle means. Steam or vapor from under the hood is another warning. It may look like smoke, but either sight calls for caution. A sweet or chemical odor can accompany escaping coolant. - Turn off the air conditioning. This reduces an extra load on the engine. Avoid hard acceleration, high engine speed, and any unnecessary strain.
- Turn on the heater only as a brief emergency measure. Full heat may draw some heat away from the engine while you move toward a nearby safe stopping place. It is not a repair and should not be used to justify a longer drive. If heat or fumes make the cabin unsafe, open the windows and prioritize stopping.
- Signal and leave traffic carefully. Move to a parking area, side street, or shoulder that provides as much separation from moving vehicles as possible. Do not make an abrupt or dangerous stop in a travel lane solely to protect the engine.
- Shift to Park and shut off the engine. Set the parking brake and turn on hazard lights when appropriate. Continued operation keeps producing heat and can worsen damage.
- Move occupants to a protected location. Stay away from traffic. If the vehicle is stopped in a dangerous position, contact emergency or roadside assistance rather than standing beside it.
If the warning is accompanied by an oil-pressure light, severe noise, loss of power, or visible steam, shut down as soon as you can stop safely. Follow any vehicle-specific directions in the owner’s manual.
Do not open a hot cooling system
Never remove a radiator cap or pressurized coolant-reservoir cap while the engine is hot. Cooling systems operate under pressure, and opening one can release boiling coolant and steam with enough force to cause severe burns. A cap that feels cool at the top does not prove that the system beneath it is safe.
Do not lean over the hood if steam is escaping, and keep hands, clothing, tools, and hair away from belts and fans. Electric cooling fans can start unexpectedly, even when the engine is off. Do not touch hoses, the radiator, or wet areas to test their temperature.
Should you pour cold water on the engine?
No. Pouring cold water over a hot engine or radiator can cause a rapid temperature change and may damage components. Adding fluid to a hot, pressurized system is also hazardous. Can you drive an overheating car?
Driving with an active overheating warning is risky. The temperature display cannot tell you how much coolant remains, whether circulation has stopped, or how close the engine is to damage. Even a short distance can be too far when coolant is escaping quickly or a water pump, belt, fan, or another critical component has failed.

What to do after the engine has cooled

Once everything is fully cool, you may look under the vehicle from a safe distance for a puddle or obvious leak. Note its location and color without touching or tasting the fluid. Remember that clear water beneath a vehicle can be normal condensation from the air conditioner, while automotive fluids can be difficult to identify by appearance alone.
If the owner’s manual provides a coolant-level check at the translucent reservoir, follow that procedure exactly. Never substitute an unapproved coolant or mix products based only on color; coolant specifications and colors are not universal. A low reservoir is evidence that deserves investigation, not an invitation to refill and assume the problem is solved.
Do not rely on a restart as a test
Repeatedly starting the engine to see whether the gauge rises again can recreate the dangerous condition and add damage. If a restart is necessary to move the vehicle out of immediate danger, keep the distance as short as possible and stop if the warning returns. Otherwise, leave diagnosis for a controlled setting.
Why cars overheat
An engine produces substantial heat, and the cooling system moves that heat through coolant, passages, hoses, a thermostat, a pump, and the radiator. Airflow and cooling fans then help release it.
