How to Check Tire Pressure

Learn where to find the correct cold tire pressure, how to use a gauge, when to check it, and what a low reading may mean.

Tire pressure is easy to overlook because the tires can look normal even when one is underinflated. A quick pressure check helps you compare each tire with the vehicle manufacturer’s specified setting and notice a change before it becomes a bigger concern. The goal is not to guess at a number or make every tire feel equally firm by hand. It is to take an accurate reading and use the pressure listed for the vehicle.

Checking pressure takes only a few minutes with a reliable gauge. How often should you check tire pressure?

A monthly cold-pressure check is a practical baseline for many drivers. Check again before a long trip, after a large temperature swing, after striking a pothole or curb, and whenever a tire-pressure warning appears. Include the spare tire in periodic checks if the vehicle has one; a spare can lose air unnoticed because it is out of sight.

Make the check part of a repeatable routine. For example, keep the gauge in the glove box or trunk and check the tires at the beginning of each month. What a tire-pressure warning light means

A tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning usually means one or more tires are below the system’s expected pressure threshold. It tells you to check the tires; it does not identify the exact cause of the pressure change. Follow the owner’s manual, inspect the tires safely, and confirm the cold pressures with a gauge.
