How to Read Tire Tread Wear Patterns
Learn how to recognize center, edge, cupped, feathered, and patchy tire tread wear, what each pattern may suggest, and what to do next.
Tire tread does not always wear evenly. One tire may become smooth across the center, lose rubber along an edge, or develop a series of dips around its circumference. These patterns are useful clues because they show how the tire has been contacting the road over time.
A wear pattern cannot identify a faulty part by itself. Inflation, alignment, rotation history, wheel balance, suspension condition, driving habits, road surfaces, and the tire itself can overlap. Reading the tread helps you describe the concern and decide how quickly it needs attention; inspection and measurements are still needed for a diagnosis.
Begin with a safe, complete tread check
Park on a level surface away from traffic, set the parking brake, and switch off the vehicle. Use good lighting and look across the full width of each tire, then compare tires on the same axle and at all four positions. Turn the steering wheel only if doing so safely exposes more of the front tread. Never crawl beneath a vehicle or rely on a jack for support.
Run your hand lightly across the tread only when the tire is cool and you can see that no sharp cord, glass, or metal is exposed. Look for differences between the inner shoulder, center ribs, and outer shoulder. Also note cuts, cracks, embedded objects, bulges, missing chunks, or a change in the tire’s shape.
Tread-wear indicator bars are molded across the main grooves. When surrounding tread is level with a bar, that groove has reached the indicator. These bars do not explain why the tire wore down, and one section may become unsafe before the rest. Follow applicable law and the tire or vehicle manufacturer’s guidance rather than treating a single visual check as a guarantee.
Center tread wear
When the center ribs are noticeably smoother than both shoulders, the middle of the tire has been doing more work. Excess inflation pressure can contribute by changing the contact patch, but it is not the only possibility. Tire construction, wheel width, load, speed, and past operating conditions may affect the appearance.
Check pressure when the tires are cold, using an accurate gauge and the specification on the vehicle’s door placard or owner’s manual. The number molded on the tire sidewall is generally a maximum tire rating, not the vehicle’s recommended everyday pressure. Do not release air from a warm tire simply because its pressure has risen during driving.
If pressure is currently correct but center wear is already present, the tread will not grow back. Review the pressure history and have the tire assessed for continued use.
Wear on both outer edges
A tire worn on both shoulders while retaining more tread in the center may have operated underinflated. Low pressure can make the shoulders carry more of the load and also generate excess heat. Repeated heavy loading, cornering, tire design, or operating conditions can contribute to shoulder wear as well.
Inflate only to the vehicle specification when cold and investigate repeated pressure loss. A puncture, damaged valve, wheel problem, or bead leak may be responsible. Continually adding air without locating the leak does not resolve it. A tire that has been driven significantly underinflated can have internal damage that is not visible from outside.
Wear on one edge: inside or outside
Wear concentrated on a single shoulder often suggests that the wheel’s angles or loaded position deserve measurement. If the inner edge wears faster, it may be difficult to see without deliberately checking behind the visible tread. Outer-edge wear can be easier to spot. Alignment settings, worn or bent steering and suspension parts, ride height, vehicle load, and impact damage can all influence edge wear.
An alignment is not automatically the complete repair. If a joint, bushing, spring, bearing, or other component is loose or damaged, it may prevent the wheel from holding the intended angle. The underlying condition should be corrected before final alignment when appropriate.
Edge wear accompanied by pulling, an off-center steering wheel, or a recent curb or pothole impact is useful information for an inspection. Sudden steering changes or visible structural damage call for a safe stop rather than continued driving.
Feathered tire tread
Feathering describes tread blocks that feel smoother in one direction and sharper in the other, like a row of tiny ramps. It may be easier to feel by moving a hand across the tread than to see. Incorrect toe alignment is a common contributor because the tire scrubs slightly sideways as it rolls, but looseness, tire characteristics, and operating conditions must also be considered.
Feathering can create road noise that changes with speed. Rotating the tires may change the sound, but rotation alone does not correct an alignment or component problem. Have the steering and suspension checked and wheel angles measured before assuming the tire itself is the sole cause.
Cupping or scalloped wear
Cupping appears as a repeating series of low spots or scoops around the tread. The dips may occur on one shoulder or across several tread ribs. They can produce a humming sound, vibration, or a rough sensation that increases with road speed.
Possible contributors include wheel imbalance, a tire or wheel that does not rotate uniformly, loose or worn steering and suspension parts, weak damping, and an existing irregular wear pattern that has progressed. Because several causes can create similar marks, replacing one suspected part without checking the complete wheel-and-suspension system may not solve the problem.

Flat spots and isolated patches
A localized flat area can follow a wheel lockup, severe braking event, or a long period of storage, depending on the tire and circumstances. Temporary vibration after a vehicle has been parked may diminish as the tires warm, while physical tread loss will not. Patchy wear can also be associated with imbalance, damage, or variations in the tire-and-wheel assembly.
Do not deliberately repeat hard braking or high-speed driving to test a vibration. If the shaking is severe, appeared after an impact, or comes with a bulge or loss of pressure, slow down smoothly and stop in a safe place. Arrange assistance if safe operation is in doubt.
What abnormal wear can and cannot tell you
Tread wear records the past. Correcting pressure or alignment can help prevent further abnormal wear, but it cannot restore rubber already lost. A tire may still need replacement because of remaining depth, damage, age, internal condition, or the severity of the pattern.
Likewise, even wear does not prove that a tire is safe. Age-related cracking, a puncture, internal impact damage, sidewall injury, or a separated component may exist without a classic tread pattern. Warning signs such as a growing bulge, exposed cords, rapid air loss, severe vibration, or tread distortion need prompt professional attention.
When to stop driving
Stop as soon as it is safe if a tire is rapidly losing pressure, has a bulge, shows exposed body cords, is separating, rubs another component, or causes severe new vibration or unstable handling. Avoid abrupt steering and braking, move away from traffic, and use roadside or towing assistance when the vehicle cannot be operated safely.
Less dramatic uneven wear still deserves timely evaluation. Continuing to drive can remove the remaining tread from a thin shoulder, increase noise and vibration, and make it harder to preserve a usable tire.
Preparing for a tire inspection
Record the cold pressures, where the wear appears, when you first noticed it, and whether there is pulling, noise, vibration, or a steering change. Mention recent impacts, tire repairs, rotations, wheel work, alignments, suspension repairs, and changes in vehicle loading.

Can tire pressure alone explain uneven wear?

Will an alignment fix a tire that is already worn unevenly?
