Flashing vs. Solid Check Engine Light

Parts stores and consumer readers may provide a code and short description, but a description such as “system too lean” or “misfire detected” is not an instruction to buy a particular part. A technician may need to inspect wiring and connections, review live sensor data, test fuel or ignition operation, check for leaks, and compare results with manufacturer procedures.
Clearing a code before diagnosis erases useful clues and turns off the light only temporarily if the fault remains. It can also reset emissions readiness monitors. Write down the exact code and symptoms, but leave the stored information intact for the person diagnosing the vehicle.

Record what happened while it is fresh in your mind. Useful observations include:
- Whether the light was flashing, solid, or changed between the two
- Whether it appeared during startup, idling, cruising, acceleration, or climbing a hill
- Engine temperature and any other warning lights or messages
- Shaking, hesitation, stalling, weak acceleration, noises, smoke, or odors
- Recent refueling, maintenance, repairs, battery work, or unusually wet weather
- Whether the symptom changes when the engine is cold or warm
